Tuesday 22nd March:- From Sea to Sky

The Slide Lecture by Dr Peter Brandham took us on a fascinating journey from the Olympic National Park in Washington State, eastwards across the Cascade Mountains, into Idaho and Montana then north following the Rocky Mountains into Alberta, Canada.

Dr Brandham has worked at Kew Gardens for many years and his pictures illustrated both the spectacular landscapes of the region and botanical details of the indigenous plants. The title of the lecture “From Sea to Sky” referred to our starting point where exposure to winds from the Pacific Ocean has created a temperate rain forest with 300ft high western hemlocks, and to the arctic conditions of the Canadian Rockies where plants are unable to survive. In between we were shown numerous rare flowers and were told how they were related to our familiar garden plants.
